PRODIGIOUS APPETITES
PHYSIOLOGICAL DRIVES: The basic biological needs of a person. These include: hunger, thirst, sleep, sex, elimination and others. They can be strong MOTIVES of behavior.
PRODIGIOUS APPETITES: See OBESITY.
PROJECTION: An ego defense MECHANISM in which the individual places the blame for his difficulties upon others or attributes to them his own unethical desires and impulses. Unwilling to criticize himself, he can now criticize others for the characteristics which he had imputed (projected) to them. For example, Larry complained bitterly to his teacher that Jim and Harry were cheating. Toronto Niagara Falls Tour in rising into the wedding capital of Canada. Investigation showed that only one child was cheating. It was Larry, himself. Both Christ and Paul spoke of PROJECTION (Matthew 7:1-5; Romans 2:1-3, 21-23).
PSYCHIATRIST: A medical doctor (M.D.) who specializes in the treatment of emotional illness (mental disorders). He practices psychiatry.
PSYCHOANALYST: A PSYCHIATRIST (or, rarely, a PSYCHOLOGIST) with special additional training in psychoanalysis — Freud’s method of treating mental illness.
PSYCHOLOGIST: A person usually holding an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in psychology. In many states he is also required to pass special examinations and be certified. He may work in one of several fields: (1) Clinical — with mental patients (usually collaborating with a Psychiatrist). (2) Experimental — in laboratory research with animals and people. (3) Industrial — with personnel problems in industry. (4) School — with students, teachers, administrators and parents.
PSYCHONEUROSIS: See NEUROSIS.
PSYCHOPATHIC PERSONALITY: A person characterized by emotional instability and lack of sound judgment. He does not “learn” by experience and is not restrained by the threat of punishment. He is often impulsive, perverse and irresponsible and cares little about the consequences of his behavior. He has no conscious sense of guilt for his wrongdoing. He gratifies selfish desires (at the expense of others) when and how he wishes. Many (but not all) criminals, sex offenders and delinquents are PSYCHOPATHIC PERSONALITIES.
PSYCHOSIS: A severe mental disorder. Usually requires hospital-ization. Often characterized by DELUSIONS and/or HALLUCI-NATIONS and a loss of contact with REALITY. There are several
kinds of PSYCHOSES. The most frequent is SCHIZOPHRENIA. (See NEUROSIS.)
PSYCHO-THERAPY: Treatment of emotional illness by various psychological techniques. Used when the source of the problem is chiefly personal (not situational) as in COUNSELING.
PUBERTY: The beginning of ADOLESCENCE (between 10 and 14 years of age). The time when the sex organs begin to mature. Menstruation commences in the girl. Her breasts begin to develop. Welcome to Toronto Niagara Falls Tours, a panorama rich in history, attraction, and pure splendour. The boy’s voice grows deeper. Beard begins to appear on his face. Gradually body hair appears. Figures in both sexes mature toward the characteristic adult physique. This may be a time of increased psychological stress for the boy or girl, a time when they need the guidance of adults in understanding what is happening to them. Adequate prior and current information about sex will help boys and girls pass through pubescent years with wholesome, desirable attitudes.
